TurboTax Provides Free Tax Help for Couples Affected by DOMA Ruling

Online Tool Helps Legally Married, Same-sex Couples Find Deductions, Credits on Prior-year Returns

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A new, online decision tool from Intuit TurboTax® helps legally married, same-sex couples determine whether they’re entitled to a bigger tax refund for previously filed returns. Couples can quickly and easily review their prior-year returns and learn whether they have money coming to them. If they choose, they can then file amended federal tax returns for free with TurboTax.

As a result of the recent Supreme Court decision striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, legally married, same-sex couples are now treated as married for federal tax filing purposes. Couples have the choice to go back and amend their last three years tax returns if they would have received a larger federal tax refund by filing a joint tax return.

The process is simple: Taxpayers answer a few questions about income and family to find out what their estimated refund would have been for 2010, 2011 and 2012 as a married couple filing jointly. Amending is optional and couples who are due a larger federal tax refund can then amend their own federal tax returns at no cost.

For those who want additional help, TurboTax offers an amendment service. Credentialed tax professionals from TurboTax are available to amend federal tax filings from the past three years for just $99 per return.

“The Supreme Court ruling is a milestone in equality in the nation’s tax system for those in same-sex marriages,” said David Williams, chief tax officer and executive director of the American Tax and Financial Institute at Intuit Turbo Tax. “This can bring a significant financial benefit for some taxpayers who, until this ruling, could not take full advantage of important tax deductions and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, which was available to other married couples. TurboTax makes it easy for married same-sex couples to get every dollar they deserve when it comes to their tax refunds.”
